Ashling's attempt to build a virtual version of her recently passed brother plunges the world into a massive blackout, forcing her to journey through the Lace to turn it all back on and get him back. This fantastical, electro-folk musical aims to explore the integration of technology into our everyday lives and the way we mourn loved ones' passings on in the technological age. Join Ashling and rediscover fire in a world that only knows of electricity.

The Discovery of Fire is currently in development, and has had a 15-minute presentation at Musical Theatre Factory in New York City in October 2016.

The ultimate goal will be to incorporate aspects of augmented and virtual reality to recreate the technological world Ashling travels through.

Atlantic: America & The Great War

Music & Lyrics Christopher Anselmo

Book & Lyrics Ryan Bernsten & Desiree Staples

The Royal Conservatoire of Scotland and Chicago's American Music Theatre Project teamed up to produce a unique world-premiere musical, Atlantic, at the 2017 Edinburgh Festival. The musical's first half, A Scottish Story is by Scotland-based writing team, Noisemaker.

On the eve of WWI, two African American sisters uncover their complicated European ancestry, but when one disappears while tracing their lineage overseas, the other must leave home for the first time to find her. Part two of the exciting collaboration, America and the Great War is an ensemble-driven adventure with a rousing folk score that explores the timely uncertainty of what it means to be American.

Another Way West

The 85th Annual Waa-Mu Show

Direction David H. Bell

An ambitious student named Kate sets off on a research expedition across the Oregon Trail to solve a mystery left by the journal of her ancestor and namesake, Kathleen O’Reilly. Soon after she sets out into the wilderness, Kate unexpectedly becomes the sole legal guardian of her young nieces and nephews. Together they continue Kate’s adventure into the heart of the mythical American west. The journal entries bring history to new life along the trail where the modern-day and past adventures intertwine. Kate looks to the past for guidance; Kathleen to the future for hope, as they both forge their formidable journeys towards finding a new understanding of home.

The Waa-Mu Show - with alum like Sheldon Harnick, Brian D'Arcy James, Stephen Colbert, Walter Kerr and more - is easily Northwestern's coolest tradition. Each year, nearly 80 students get together to create this completely original musical. Though these are a few songs I contributed to that year's show, I highly recommend checking out Waa-Mu and the incredible work the other students have created over at www.soundcloud.com/thewaamushow

Fable

Music & Lyrics Christopher Anselmo

Book H.S. Kaufman

Cast Michael Luwoye, Dan Rosales, Madison Micucci, Marissa O'Donnell, Gerianne Perkins, Alex Walton

*Official Selection of the NYMF's 2014 Next Link Project, where it received two extensions and sold out its entire run.

It's graduation time. When a mysterious classmate crashes their last epic night of celebration, a group of childhood friends is forced to confront the secrets they've been keeping from one another. Will their friendships survive the night?

With an imaginative and passionate contemporary score and a charming book, Fable is a modern American reworking of this timeless storytelling form. Explore the moments when we are forced to change, whether we like it or not. What happens when the stories we were told as kids are revealed for the fictions they truly are?

"Anselmo's music is by turns soaring, jaunty, and hard-rocking ... His lyrics are among the cleanest I've ever heard at NYMF" - Chris Caggiano

Cloyd is a patient at a mental hospital, and he is being visited by a ghost. But as more people start to see the ghost as well, they are forced to take Cloyd seriously and question what really qualifies as "crazy." Haunted Train is an exciting new musical from Christian Fleming and Randy Gross (book) and Christopher Anselmo (music & lyrics) that explores how stigma can pervade even the ways we medically treat mental illness, and the problems that arise when we view the human mind as something to be cured.

Haunted Train was commission and produced Off-Broadway by Unmasked Theatre Company in New York City. Unmasked's mission use musical theatre to promote social change and address the stigmas surrounding mental illness.

Gold

The 84th Annual Waa-Mu Show

Direction David H. Bell

A team of ambitious American athletes come together for a remarkable journey to Berlin to compete in the 1936 Olympic Games. Along the way they meet the Olympic press corps with similar hopes and dreams of capturing their career defining moment in history. Upon their arrival in Germany, both the athletes and journalists encounter personal and political obstacles that threaten their one shot at victory – and the struggles and triumphs of this particular competition prove to be greater than they ever imagined. United in their passion to triumph, unique friendships are made when the group discovers there is more to life than winning the gold.
